Three Des Moines business leaders were inducted into the Iowa Business Hall of Fame Tuesday at the downtown Marriott Hotel. Connie Wimer, Roger Brooks and the late Roy Carver were honored at the black-tie event sponsored by the Greater Des Moines Committee, a division of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. The group founded the hall of fame in 1975.

Wimer, 70, publisher of the Des Moines Business Record, Cityview and six other publications, became the first woman inducted into the hall. She started the Des Moines Business Record in 1983 and Cityview in 1992. Wimer is also noted for transforming Iowa Title Co., which she purchased in 1976, from a struggling business into the premier title company in Iowa.

Chairman and chief executive of AmerUs Group Co., Brooks started at Central Life Assurance Co. while still in college. By the age of 34, he had been named president of the company. Through the years, Brooks negotiated several mergers and acquisitions, increasing his company’s performance. In 1994, he facilitated a merger with American Mutual Insurance Co., which created the AmerUs group.

Carver, founder of Carver Pump Co. and Carver Foundry Products, perhaps is best known for establishing Bandag Inc., a manufacturer of tire retreading equipment. One of the nation’s wealthiest businessmen, Carver donated millions of dollars to the University of Iowa. Carver died in 1981. His son Roy Carver Jr. accepted the induction on behalf of his father.

The inductees were also recognized for their volunteer efforts and contributions to supporting Iowa communities.
