The Business Record has named Steve Boal, chief financial officer at Accumold in Ankeny, as this year’s Deloitte CFO of the year. The award honors an often unsung individual who demonstrates outstanding performance in his or her role as corporate financial steward.

Boal joined Accumold 22 years ago and has helped steer the company’s growth, which has included two additions as it has experienced what he described as a tenfold growth over the past two decades.

Boal said the success of the company during his tenure has been about relationships, including the partnership he has with Accumold CEO and President Roger Hargens.

“We’re a great team,” Boal said. “I’m that person that is a steady guy, takes care of the details and keeps the train on the track, and he’s the visionary and enjoys our customers and what they need. Between the two of us we really work well together and have mutual respect for one another.”

In a letter recommending Boal for the award, Hargens described Boal as, “a humble man that looks for the positive in everything.”

He also wrote that Boal has complemented his role in the company’s growth.

“His advice and influence have helped keep our company fiscally strong as he helps me balance our goals and resources carefully,” Hargens wrote. “To me, he has been the perfect CFO.”

Materials submitted supporting Boal’s nomination indicate that during his tenure at Accumold the company’s revenue has increased substantially to become a global supplier of precision micro-molded plastic parts for a variety of applications, including the medical industry, fiber and micro-optics industry and other emerging technologies.

Kim Butler Hegedus, executive vice president and chief lending officer at Community State Bank, said in her letter nominating Boal for the award that he has “always held himself to the highest ethical and professional standards.”

“Accumold’s success is in part a testament to Steve Boal’s ability to work creative financing solutions and capital structures while ensuring the financial stability of the company,” Butler Hegedus wrote.

Boal will be presented with the award at the Business Record’s annual Economic Forecast Luncheon at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel on Jan. 24.
