Can Play Sports to host open house at Valley Community Center on June 3
Can Play Sports will host an open house on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Valley Community Center in West Des Moines. While Can Play will have a permanent home at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex, a state-of-the-art sports facility in West Des Moines, construction will not be completed until later this summer. As an alternative, Can Play decided to host the event at the Valley Community Center, 4444 Fuller Road, but will provide updates on the RecPlex and other summer initiatives. The event is free to the public and open to all ages with many activities such as a wheelchair obstacle course, a golf game challenge and corn hole competition. There will be food trucks available and goodie bags for attendees. Can Play Sports was formed earlier this year when two existing nonprofit organizations, Courage League Sports and Opportunity on Deck, joined forces to increase the positive impacts on youths through the growth and evolution of adaptive and no-cost sports programs. Both organizations have created programs for underserved youths to give them the opportunity to play and build self-confidence. The West Des Moines Leadership’s current class has raised more than $50,000 for the organization, and class members will be working at the open house.
