Capital Crossroads looks to 2.0
Capital Crossroads’ quarterly meeting this week brought a range of news and recaps of major developments. Among the updates:
- Gene Meyer, president of the Greater Des Moines Partnership and Downtown Community Alliance, said work has begun to negotiate a contract with a firm that will help with Capital Crossroads 2.0.
- The Capital Core team noted the continued negotiations on financing for the Hilton hotel planned next to the Iowa Events Center. The hope is to start construction in March.
- Downtown housing is nearly full, and more is on the way.
- Construction is underway on Kum & Go LC’s Renzo Piano-designed headquarters, Krause Gateway Center, in Western Gateway Park.
- Work continues on a baseline study of asthma rates by the Polk County Health Department and others.
- Debate over a proposed bus rapid transit line continues following community leaders’ trips to see systems in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Kansas City, Mo.
- Bravo Greater Des Moines is expected to name capital campaign award winners by the end of the month, distributing $450,000 for capital improvements to support the arts.
- Iowa’s Water Future, a task force backed by the Partnership, hopes to deliver recommendations by Dec. 1 on how to reduce water pollution. Discussions are centering on how to finance voluntary work through the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy.
- The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization has launched an online map of many coming transportation projects.
