Chevron lays off 70 in Ames

Chevron USA, at 416 S. Bell Ave. in Ames, which is home to Chevron Renewable Energy Group, reported a layoff of 70 people effective June 18, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act data. In 2022, Chevron had announced its acquisition of Renewable Energy Group in Ames for $3.15 billion. At that time, Chevron REG employed about 350 people. According to Chevron, the purchase was expected to “accelerate progress toward Chevron’s goal to grow renewable fuels production capacity to 100,000 barrels per day by 2030 and brings additional feedstock supplies and pre-treatment facilities.” Earlier this year, Chevron moved its corporate headquarters to Houston. The company said in February it planned a 15% to 20% staff reduction by the end of 2026 to cut costs.
