Chuck’s Restaurant, which has been closed for nearly a year while the building in which it is located was renovated, is reopening on Oct. 4. The restaurant, located at 3610 Sixth Ave., is one of Des Moines’ oldest dining establishments. The building that houses Chuck’s underwent a $1.4 million renovationthat included replacing an aged roof and rehabilitating five apartments above the restaurant that had been unoccupied for years. The renovation also included major structural repairs, updates to mechanical systems and improvements to the facade. Chuck’s initially will offer carryout and a limited menu that will include pizza, salad and onion rings. The restaurant will be open from 4:30 to 8 p.m. for several weeks. The restaurant opened in 1956 and for decades was operated by members of the Bisignano family. Emily and Lucas Jones purchased the restaurant — and the building — in 2014.
