City of Des Moines hires civil and human rights director

Mitzi Bolanos Anderson has been hired by the city of Des Moines as director of the civil and human rights department. Anderson most recently worked for the city of Anchorage, Alaska, where she was executive director of the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission. Anderson is a public interest attorney with nearly 15 years of experience in federal, state and local governments. She served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member earlier in her career and is also a certified mediator, resolving disputes for the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights from between 2017 and 2019. Anderson, who will be paid $138,000 annually, began working for the city on May 2.
