The Des Moines City Council last week approved a petition to the Iowa Department of Economic Development requesting an extension of the Des Moines Gateway Enterprise Zone for another 10 years.

This zone was established in 1999 and is set to expire in July. It includes the central business district and the Riverpoint West development area. The Enterprise Zone program provides financial incentives in the form of state corporate income tax credits and sales and service tax rebates, along with other benefits to attract new residential, commercial and industrial investment in distressed areas.

“It’s one of the oldest enterprise zones in the state,” said Rita Conner of the city’s Office of Economic Development. “Quite a bit has been achieved, but there’s still undeveloped land, and there are buildings that could be rehabbed.”
