Yet, it still is waiting for funding commitments from Ankeny, Urbandale and Johnston to match the commitments made by the cities of Des Moines, West Des Moines and Clive.

“It’s looking good, but we just need to finish the process,” said Todd Fogdall, director of development. “We’ve been talking with these suburbs for a long time, and it’s just time to bring this to a close.”

The theater raised $1.2 million between March 15 and July 15 to match and receive a Vision Iowa grant, with donations from about 120 individual and corporate donors.

The Civic Center will finish lighting and seat replacements by the opening of its next season in September. It also will add two new state-of-the-art electronic signs outside in October. Between seasons next summer, Fogsdall said it will focus on major interior renovations, adding new paint and furniture. It also will redesign the ticket office.

The success of raising money is coupled with an increase in ticket sales. “Monty Python’s Spamalot” set a record for one-week gross sales, topping $1 million. Season ticket sales for the upcoming Betts Broadway Series are up as well, Fogdall said, with about 6,700 season tickets sold so far.
