A nonpartisan think tank called The Common Sense Institute (CSI) launched its first Iowa branch on Jan. 18. In a press release, the new organization announced its plans to research and model the potential effect of proposed public policies on the state’s economy.

The think tank has chapters in Arizona, Oregon and Colorado, where it published research on topics like the impact of Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour on Denver’s economy. In Iowa, CSI plans to study housing, tax policy and workforce issues.

“CSI’s presence in Iowa is a game-changer for our state, and I’m thrilled to announce this launch,” Joe Murphy, who will serve as CSI Iowa board chair and is president of the Iowa Business Council, said in a prepared statement. “We are at a crucial juncture in shaping our economic policies, and informed decisions are key. CSI’s rigorous research will be instrumental in guiding these decisions.”

Paige Thorson, Gov. Kim Reynolds’ former deputy chief of staff, will serve as CSI’s strategic adviser. The following business leaders from around the state have joined the organization’s board:

  • Gavin Blair, CEO of the Iowa Association of Realtors
  • Heidi Leavengood, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Ruan Transportation Management Systems
  • Amber Mason Lusson, a criminal justice policy expert and community leader
  • Doug Neumann, executive director of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance
  • John Sorenson, CEO of the Iowa Bankers Association

“Iowa is a place where free enterprise is taking wing — a place where common sense policy is on the march,” said Kristin Strohm, CSI president and CEO. “The expansion of the CSI into Iowa aligns with our commitment to be in all pivotal policy states across the nation, providing policymakers and citizens with the facts on the issues that impact their lives.”
