A major U.S. oil company and a leading food processor announced today that they are teaming up to produce biodiesel from animal fat, Reuters reported.

ConocoPhillips, the third-largest U.S. oil company, and Tyson Foods Inc., the world’s largest chicken, beef and pork processor, plan to process beef, pork and chicken fat from Tyson rendering plants at ConocoPhillips refineries to produce transportation fuel. The companies said they expect biodiesel production to increase over time to as much as 175 million gallons per year.

ConocoPhillips said it will begin investing money in several of its refineries to outfit them so they can process the fuel. Tyson will make improvements this summer at some of its plants so it can start pre-processing the fats. The companies did not disclose the anticipated cost of the project.
