“Around 150 people came out for the ribbon cutting,” he said. “It was pretty amazing.”
Legacy Sports Bar and Grill, located in the Westwood Plaza retail center on the north side of Hickman Road in Waukee, is still a work in progress, he said, as he learns more about what his customers want.
“Since we opened, the menu has changed a lot,” Conrad said. “Originally we thought we would pull more of a bar crowd, but we’ve kind of grown into more of a family establishment.”
But the demographic changes every day, he said, with a big drinking crowd one night and parents and their children the next.
“That’s what’s so fascinating about being in Waukee,” Conrad said. “The area is growing so fast, and there still aren’t a lot of options for people.”
Conrad has been in the restaurant business for 15 years, working at places all over the Des Moines area.
“It’s been a dream of mine to open my own place,” he said. “But it’s a lot of work. When you do something like this, it’s not for the money. It’s because you love it and have a passion for it.”
The hardest part, Conrad said, was coming up with a name.
“I didn’t want to use my name,” he said. “And when we first opened, I had a partner, and Legacy was the only thing we could agree on.”
Legacy serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has late-night menus, plus a daily $5.50 lunch and dinner specials. It has several large flat-screen TVs and a 7-foot projection screen for viewing games. Legacy has a Major League Baseball package, Fox Sports News, ESPN, NFL Ticket and the Big Ten Network.
Conrad says the thing that will make his restaurant stand out from the competition is the level of customer service he demands from his staff.
“We treat every person like they are a guest in our house,” he said. “I even have extra servers each shift to make sure they can spend more time with the customer and give the best service possible.”
Conrad said one customer left the restaurant upset over their experience before he had a chance to try to make it better. He managed to find out who that person was, looked them up in the phone book, and not only apologized for their experience but gave them a gift certificate with the hope that they would give Legacy another try.
