At the end of August, Greater Des Moines construction employment stood at 19,100, up from 18,700 a year ago. For all of Iowa, construction employment rose 8 percent to 88,500. The industry group said contractors added jobs in 163 metropolitan areas and cut workers in 153 over the one-year period. The number of metro areas losing construction jobs is on the rise amid growing uncertainty about federal funding for construction programs and growing shortages of qualified construction workers, according to a release.
