Consumer spending hits 6-year high in December

Americans reported spending $96 per day in December 2013, the highest monthly average since September 2008 when the effects of the recession began to be felt nationwide, according to a Gallup survey. The reported spending was also the highest December average in the six years that Gallup has tracked daily spending. If the current trend continues, average daily spending could break through the $100 mark on a routine basis, and thus denote a return to levels that characterized spending in pre-recession times.
