205 wordsAll Latest News, Government Policy and Law, Real Estate and DevelopmentThe Iowa Events Center Hotel Corp. got its first look at the the proposed design of a 330-room convention center hotel planned for Des Moines. The presentation came with this caveat: This is very much a work in progress.
Representatives of the design and construction team presented a slide show and fielded questions about the project. That team consists of The Weitz Co., DLR Group, RDG Planning & Design and hotel consultant Ellis Katz. Hilton Worldwide Inc., which will operate the hotel, also is being consulted on the design.
Meanwhile, the project is encountering cost overruns that have driven up the projected cost of the planned $100 million project by 5 to 7 percent. The construction budget has a $5 million contingency built in, but efforts are underway to trim extra costs.
Meanwhile, a development agreement between Polk County and the city of Des Moines will be presented Sept. 22 to the Des Moines Urban Design Review Board, the first step in process that will require final approval by Polk County supervisors and the Des Moines City Council.
