Corell recently returned from a nearly yearlong deployment to Kuwait, where he commanded the 34th Infantry Division “Red Bulls” in support of Operation Spartan Shield. This was Corell’s sixth deployment overseas since September 2000. He has commanded at every level of the Iowa National Guard, most recently the 34th Infantry Division since September 2017. Before that, he served as the deputy commanding general-maneuver for the division, and from June 2016 to September 2017 he served on active duty as the deputy commander, NATO Multinational Division Southeast, in Bucharest, Romania. Corell replaces Interim Adjutant General Stephen Osborn, who will continue serving as deputy adjutant general. An Iowa native, Corell enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in January 1986 and received his officer’s commission from the Iowa Military Academy’s Officer Candidate School in March 1989. Corell has a business management degree from Upper Iowa University, and received a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.
