Cownie announces reelection bid for Des Moines mayor

Frank Cownie, Des Moines’ longest-serving mayor,  today announced plans to seek reelection to the position he’s held since 2004.

Cownie previously was an at-large City Council member and chairman of the city’s Plan and Zoning Commission.

He’ll have at least one opponent in the Nov. 5 election. Joe Grandanette, a retired teacher, has filed nomination papers.

Cownie, in a news release, touted several accomplishments during his tenure, such as the construction of several LEED-certified buildings including the offices of Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Nationwide Insurance. In addition, during his time as mayor, the city has stepped up efforts to improve roads, remove dilapidated buildings and reduce flood risks, according to the release.

“Our work is not finished,” Cownie said in a prepared statement. “To thrive in the future, Des Moines must attract quality jobs, protect its natural resources, and provide safe neighborhoods, clean parks, and affordable housing for its citizens.”

The deadline to file nomination papers is Sept. 19.
