Patty and Jim Cownie

Philanthropists Patty and Jim Cownie have been chosen to receive the Robert D. Ray Pillar of Character Award, the highest award of the Robert D. and Billie Ray Center at Drake University. A selection committee of more than 50 people chose the Cownies to receive the award, which reflects former Gov. Ray’s lifelong commitment to civility and character development. The Cownies have been advocates of the Ray Center since its inception as Character Counts in Iowa in 1997. Jim Cownie was instrumental in the development of the program’s business model and vision for the future and he continues to provide guidance to the organization. His wife, Patty, has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to volunteerism. She served twice on Drake University’s board of trustees and currently serves on the Iowa Board of Regents.
