D.M.-area communities see increase in homebuilding permits

The number of residential building permits issued in the Des Moines area in August jumped 37% from July, the first uptick after four months of declines, a review of communities’ building permit records shows.

Overall, 377 permits were issued for the construction of townhouses and single-family houses in August, the records show. In July, 274 permits were issued in 13 Des Moines-area communities and Polk County.

The number of residential permits issued had been on a downward trend since April. In March, 513 residential permits were issued, a high for the year. In April, 468 residential permits were issued.

The value of August’s residential permits totaled $82.9 million, nearly 10% more than July’s permit value of $75.7 million.

The average value of a residential building permit issued in August was $219,908, the review showed.
