Organizers of a public-private partnership to reduce asthma among children in three east Des Moines neighborhoods will publicly launch their project at 4 p.m. Wednesday with an event at the Martin Luther King Park Community Center, 1650 Garfield Ave. Healthy Homes East Bank will target deteriorating housing in the Capitol Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Park and Capitol East neighborhoods, where moisture, mold and pests have led to elevated rates of asthma. The collaborative effort led by Des Moines nonprofits, hospitals and government agencies will receive a $250,000 national grant with area hospitals providing a $250,000 match.
