The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority and Des Moines International Airport have stopped enforcing the mask mandate for public transportation and airports after a federal judge on Monday struck down the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s decision to extend the mandate to May 3. The Transportation Security Administration immediately rescinded the requirement, and DART and the airport quickly followed suit, saying they would no longer enforce the mandate. Both organizations said masks will remain an option for those who want to wear one. According to a news release from DART, masks are no longer required on buses or inside the DART Central Station, but masks will be available at those locations for people who wish to wear one. Officials with DART said they will continue several of the public health measures, such as daily cleaning and sanitizing of DART vehicles and inside common spaces at the Central Station, asking staff and riders to remain home or keep from riding DART if they are sick, and leaving windows open when weather permits to increase air circulation. The airport’s decision also coincided with the decision by airlines to immediately stop requiring masks for passengers, with some airlines making the announcement midflight.
