The average price of a flight out of Des Moines International Airport went up last year, but Des Moines’ spot in the national rankings improved.

The average itinerary price to fly out of Des Moines was $417.93 in 2011, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, up from $403.23 in 2010.

Des Moines ranked No. 120 out of 150 in average outbound ticket price, according to a Business Record analysis of the top 150 airports by outgoing passenger volume. That ranking was improved from No. 129 in 2010.

Des Moines still ranks lower than most surrounding airports. Omaha’s Eppley Airfield came in at No. 60, with an average price of $353.26. Kansas City International Airport was No. 35 with an average price of $329.63.

Des Moines  airport officials in January announced the addition of service from Southwest Airlines, which is expected to bring airfares down across the board. Southwest is set to begin service on Sept. 30, with flights between Des Moines and Chicago Midway Airport.

The national average outbound fare for the 150 largest airports was up to $368.93 in 2011 from $343.47 in 2010.
