KCCI-TV: More trains could be headed to Des Moines in 2021. The Des Moines City Council voted Monday to move forward with a $25 million railroad facility on the city’s east side. The transload facility, or railport, would be located at East Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Southeast 15th Street. Officials in support of the project said a railport would take trucks off the highway and save money. “We were out at a lumberyard a couple months ago, and we saw a truck coming in from Ontario, Canada, bringing lumber in,” Des Moines Industrial CEO Paul Cownie said. “I gotta think when we can bring lumber into our transloading facility via train we’re gonna be saving money for consumers in that way.” Cownie, who heads the group that would own and operate the facility, said it could reduce construction costs in Central Iowa.
