The city of Des Moines’ Plan DSM: Creating Our Tomorrow is the 2016 recipient of the Iowa chapter of the American Planning Association’s Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan. The Burnham Award is given to plans that exhibit innovative and visionary approaches addressing a community’s future. Plan DSM was recognized by APA Iowa for having a clear, values-based vision for Des Moines; implementing the regional Tomorrow Plan at the local level; focusing development and redevelopment in areas with adequate infrastructure; and emphasizing mixed-use development, according to a release. PlanDSM received national recognition earlier this month as an American Planning Association Silver Level award recipient for the Comprehensive Plan Standards for Sustainable Communities program.
