Although it no longer holds the top spot, Greater Des Moines still ranks among the top five metropolitan areas for its economic strength, according to 2015 rankings from Policom Corp.

The Des Moines-West Des Moines metropolitan area is ranked fourth this year after coming in at No. 1 in 2014. Ranked ahead of Des Moines are the Washington, D.C., Seattle and Austin, Texas, metropolitan areas.

In compiling the list, Policom determined that the highest-ranked areas have had rapid, consistent growth in both size and quality for an extended period of time. The lowest-ranked areas have been in volatile decline for an extended period of time.

In all, 381 metropolitan areas were ranked.
