The American Lung Association’s annual State of the Air report listed Des Moines and West Des Moines among cities with the cleanest air, based on smog levels. Those two cities, along with Ames, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo and Cedar Falls, had no days when ozone hit dangerous levels in 2017. Davenport’s air worsened that year, the report notes. The association dinged Iowa for a lack of full monitoring. “Unfortunately, due to a lack in monitoring and incomplete data, there is currently not enough information to evaluate short-term and year-round particle pollution in Iowa. Since particle pollution can lodge deep in the lungs and trigger asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes, and can even be lethal, it’s important for the state to get quality data for this type of air pollution.”
