A Des Moines medical manufacturer has pledged a $10 million gift to his alma mater, Cedarville University in southeastern Ohio. Mark Scharnberg, a 1997 Cedarville graduate, made the gift on behalf of his family’s businesses, Katecho and Surmasis Pharmaceuticals, and in honor of his father, Lorne Scharnberg. The university on Friday presented its medal of honor to Lorne Scharnberg and announced that it will name its new business building in honor of Scharnberg. He served three terms as chair of the university’s board and one year as vice chair. Lorne Scharnberg and his late wife, Kathi, founded Katecho, a medical manufacturing business, in 1984. They also started Surmasis Pharmaceuticals, a contract pharmaceutical manufacturer. The $10 million gift is the largest in the university’s 132-year history. Cedarville University is an accredited Baptist institution with an enrollment of 4,380 undergraduate, graduate and online students in more than 150 areas of study.
