Des Moines Monopoly board ideas due by end of May
Board game night could feel a lot more local this holiday season.
Top Trumps USA is working on creating a Des Moines version of Monopoly. The Rhode-Island-based company announced in April that it’s collecting ideas for board spaces through the end of May, and expects the board game to be ready by the holidays this year. Top Trumps has produced Monopoly boards for cities such as Detroit, St. Louis, Jersey City, Cape Cod, Virginia Beach and more.
Top Trumps is collaborating with Catch Des Moines on the project and is meeting with several groups in the community to generate ideas for the 36 board spaces that will highlight Des Moines businesses, nonprofits, landmarks and attractions.
“After the board is filled, it will go off to our designers and to production to be here for a grand reveal that will take place [likely] the first week of December, although this may vary by a week or two,” Sarah Bowman, sales executive for Top Trumps, said in an email.
Community Chest and Chance cards will be rewritten with a Des Moines connection, but some aspects of the game will remain true to the original. The game tokens will be the same, including the Scottie dog, race car, battleship and top hat. The four corners – Pass Go, Free Parking, Go to Jail and Jail – will be unchanged.
This won’t be the first Iowa-themed Monopoly board. West Des Moines-based Heart of Iowa Market Place offers a Des Moines ‘Opoly, Cyclone-opoly and Iowa-opoly (Hawkeyes) versions of the game.
To submit ideas for the board spaces, email desmoines@toptrumps.com by May 31.
