Des Moines mostly steers clear of manufacturing job losses
Des Moines remained relatively unscathed during a rash of manufacturing job losses that caused 92 of the top 100 labor markets to suffer massive job losses in the manufacturing sector between 2004 and 2009, according to a report in Business First of Buffalo.
Des Moines lost 1,300 manufacturing jobs, placing it 14th on the top 100 list, which is ordered from biggest raw gain to biggest raw loss. In comparison, the number 100 spot is held by Detroit, which lost 118,600 jobs, and the No. 1 spot is held by Houston, which gained 21,500 jobs. Just seven markets gained jobs, and one broke even.
The loss for Detroit, largely due to layoffs in the auto industry, was nearly 40 percent of its 2004 total of 301,200 jobs.
The cumulative loss for the top 100 markets was 1.17 million jobs, making for a collective decline of 14 percent in manufacturing employment since June 2004, according to Business First.
