A four-story, mixed-use building (pictured) at 111 E. Grand Ave. in Des Moines is among 20 winners of Engineering News Record’s Best of the  Best Projects competition. The building was the competition’s office/retail/mixed-use category winner. Located in Des Moines’ East Village, the building was constructed with mass timber, an eco-friendly material increasingly used by builders in an effort to reduce carbon footprints. Construction of the building was completed in May 2019. The $18.5 million project was developed by JSC Properties, designed by Neumann Monson Architects and built by Ryan Cos. The project’s engineers included Raker Rhodes Engineering LLC and Canada-based StructureCraft. More than 900 projects were submitted to Engineering News Record’s competition, the organization said. One top winner was named in each of the competition’s 20 categories.
