Des Moines’ parks, recreation department releases annual report

One-third of the department’s record 3,546 swim lessons provided in 2022 were through a scholarship program. According to the report, there was a 45% increase in scholarships given compared with 2021. The expanded Summer Camp program, which is provided free of charge to Des Moines residents, also saw a record 200 campers during the summer of 2022. Plans call for an expansion from four sites to five for the summer of 2023. In addition, 4,400 people volunteered for the department in 2022, a 53% increase from 2021. “2022 felt like a big welcome back.” Ben Page, parks and recreation director, said in a prepared statement. “Our staff was energized by all the activities and people we got to engage with over the course of the year.
