The Des Moines Playhouse will receive a $440,730 Community Attraction and Tourism grant for the $3.6 million second phase of its redevelopment project. The grant was approved Wednesday by the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Enhance Iowa board. The second phase includes renovation of the main stage theater with new seats, ceiling and carpeting, and a range of upgrades to make the building compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act, including rails and access to the stage and entrances to the auditorium. Other improvements include a catwalk for lighting; updated lighting, sound and rigging equipment; renovated restrooms and lobbies; new green room spaces; a new fire alarm system and sprinkler system; new electrical service; and a new boiler. The board also approved $1 million for the $8.5 million construction of a 20,000-square-foot, 245-seat theater as part of the historic Harvester II building in Council Bluffs and $59,500 for a splash pool and other features at the municipal swimming pool in Strawberry Point.
