Avalanche Consulting of Austin, Texas, used 2014 American Community Survey data to check which American cities were the most affordable for owners and renters. Des Moines topped the list, with just 25 percent of its housing considered unaffordable. The most expensive market was Los Angeles, with 48 percent of the units unaffordable. Miami; New York; San Diego; Riverside, Calif.; Honolulu; Fresno, Calif.; Stockton, Calif.; Oxnard-Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and New Haven, Conn., also were among the most pricey. Other more-affordable markets included Ogden, Utah; Pittsburgh; Youngstown, Ohio; Tulsa, Okla.; Fayetteville, Ark.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Greenville, S.C.; Oklahoma City; and Wichita, Kan. Just over half of American renters live in units that are considered unaffordable.
