A Des Moines technology company is helping a West Virginia town re-create cemetery records lost during historic flooding in June, the Charleston Gazette Mail reportedNewCom Technologies was emailed by the mayor of Clendenin, W.V., asking if the company could provide its Geographic Information Systems mapping services for the community to create digital maps for its two cemeteries, the records for which were destroyed by floodwaters. NewCom President Dana McCarthy immediately said yes, recalling how the Great Flood of 1993 had immobilized Des Moines. “I remember how helpless we felt as our city water plant failed and the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers crested 14 feet above flood stage,” she said. The company provided software and services worth about $30,000 at no charge to the community.
