Des Moines has been selected to host the 2016 National Square Dance Convention, which will bring 6,000 square dancers to the city for four days.

The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau (GDMCVB) said in a release that they estimates the convention will need a total of 8,000 room nights.

Representatives from the GDMCVB and square dance enthusiasts traveled to Spokane, Wash., recently to bid for the opportunity.

During their time there, GDMCVB officials said it already booked 397 reservations for the event. Gov. Terry Branstad also sent a video to appeal to the group and said he is a former square dancer, according to a release.
