Des Moines Water Works says the newly formed Iowa Partnership for Clean Water’s advertising campaign supporting voluntary conservation work by farmers won’t help clean up the rivers the utility uses to serve nearly a half-million people tap water. In a news release, Water Works noted that the new nonprofit group has ties to the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and has bought $157,000 in TV advertisements in the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Quad Cities markets. “No matter how often it runs, no television advertisement will help solve Iowa’s serious water pollution problem,” said Graham Gillette, chairman of the Water Works board. Des Moines Water Works recently filed a federal court complaint against Sac County, Buena Vista County and Calhoun County, contending their drainage districts should be regulated as point sources of pollution under the Clean Water Act because of nitrate pollution. “More partnerships and alliances have been created than reasonable attempts towards a solution,” said Bill Stowe, Water Works CEO and general manager. Read more of Des Moines Water Works’ response.
