DMACC Newton campus to launch School of Baking and Pastry
Des Moines Area Community College plans to launch a new School of Baking and Pastry at its Newton Campus next fall. The baking program, which will be part of the college’s Iowa Culinary Institute, was made possible by a major gift to DMACC from the estate of Helen Diehl, who was president and co-owner of the Jasper County Abstract Co. for more than 40 years before retiring in 1983. The baking program will offer a one-year diploma program in which students will learn many facets of baking, from using baking tools and recipe development to learning about nutrition and using fresh ingredients. Joe DeHart, provost of the Newton Campus, is scheduled to make an official announcement during the Annual Newton Campus Holiday Celebration that will be held Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m. at 600 N. Second Ave. W. in the conference center. The celebration is open to the public; people of all ages can help decorate a giant gingerbread house. There will also be cookies, hot cocoa, movies and children’s books.
