DMACC receives Wells Fargo grant to expand ESL training
A $10,000 grant from Wells Fargo Financial will help nearly 500 English as a Second Language (ESL) learners this summer at Des Moines Area Community College’s Downtown Urban Campus, which is one of the most diverse in the state. “This generous donation will help fund a very important curriculum on our campus,” said DMACC Urban Campus Provost Laura Douglas. “English Literacy courses help learners, who are often new Iowans, develop skills to enter the workforce, improve job opportunities or prepare to be successful in college courses.” The DMACC Urban Campus provides free ESL classes taught by trained professionals. Last year, the DMACC Downtown Urban Campus served 1,688 ESL students, but each term it turns away hundreds of students who are eager to learn English, because funding cannot meet the demand.
