The Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry Network has distributed 6,000 Thanksgiving meals at its mobile food pantry sites and at Des Moines public school locations. The meals were donated by Hy-Vee and its employees, who packed 1,500 Thanksgiving meal packages on Nov. 19. Each package contained enough food for four people. “We know that this has been an especially difficult year for many across central Iowa and we wanted to ensure that more families can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner this year,” Katie Popp, regional marketing manager for Hy-Vee, said in a news release. Each meal package included two cans of green beans, two cans of corn, one 5-pound bag of potatoes, a box of instant stuffing, and a voucher for a free turkey, pie and dinner rolls at Des Moines-area Hy-Vee stores. “November is historically the busiest month of the year for food pantries, so this donation could not come at a better time for those in our community who are facing food insecurity,” DMARC CEO Matt Unger said in the news release.
