Des Moines University has received a generous gift of a commissioned sculpture from Dr. Fredric Gold, a 1973 alumnus of the university. The 12-foot-tall sculpture by Charles Strain, named “The Gathering,” will be installed in the front of the Student Education Center on the lawn adjacent to Grand Avenue. “It is my hope that the emotional impact of this sculpture will inspire others to see it as an icon of what DMU represents to itself and the community,” Gold said. Gold, a retired family medicine physician, was raised in Detroit and earned an undergraduate degree at Michigan State University before attending the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, now DMU, at its then-downtown Des Moines campus. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The couple in 2016 donated another Strain sculpture, “Duet,” to Michigan State, which stands on the banks of the Cedar River on the MSU campus. DMU will hold an unveiling and dedication ceremony for the sculpture at noon Sept. 14; the public is invited to attend.
