DNR offers new grants to address abandoned properties

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, beginning Aug. 1, will offer communities of fewer than 5,000 people grants to inspect abandoned buildings to check for asbestos and structural weaknesses. “If a building collapses and the presence of asbestos is unknown, it can increase the economic burden on the community,” said DNR staffer Scott Flagg.
