Dow gains ground after opening down 1,000
Wall Street pared some losses today after the Dow Jones industrial average lost more than a 1,000 points in volatile trading following a steep drop in Chinese shares and a selloff in oil and other commodities, Reuters reported.
The Dow, which was down 325 points in mid-morning trading, has never lost more than 800 points in a day.
As of 10:50 a.m. CDT, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 314.21 points, or 1.91 percent, at 16,145. The Nasdaq Composite was down 83.79 points, or 1.78 percent, at 4,622.25.
The Business Record’s Iowa Index – an unweighted average price of all 22 Iowa-based public companies – was down $0.92, or 2.61 percent, at $34.19.
The stock prices for all but two Iowa public companies – Ames National Corp. and Gannett Co. – were down this morning. So far this year, the Iowa Index has dropped $1.16, or 3.29 percent.
