Downtown deli set to close this month
After many years of business in Des Moines, Beggars Banquet Food & Catering will close its doors.
“I am tired, and it’s not profitable enough for me to continue,” said store owner Kyle Maxwell.
Maxwell, who has owned the delicatessen at 1301 Locust St. since 2002, said he doesn’t plan on opening another restaurant in Des Moines. Although he didn’t give a specific reason for closing the store, Maxwell said he had been “stressed.”
Maxwell said he plans to be out of the building by Oct. 19.
“We’re sorry to see him go,” said building co-owner Leslie Gearhart. “It was a great little lunch spot.”
The 2,472-square-foot restaurant was listed with Iowa Realty Commercial on Monday. Its lease rate is $15 per square foot, triple net.
Gearhart said she would like to see another deli replace Beggars Banquet. No other tenants have expressed interest in the open space at this time.
