Greater Des Moines organizations can participate in a Drake Relays tradition and promote their brands at the same time during the inaugural Downtown Street Painting event on Wednesday, April 21.

Every year prior to the Relays, Drake University student organizations decorate squares on Carpenter Avenue between 27th and 28th streets. This year, the event will be expanded to downtown to celebrate the 101st running of the Relays, which will be held April 22-24.

The Downtown Street Painting event, sponsored by Drake, the city of Des Moines and the Court District, will allow businesses and organizations to promote their brands by painting the sidewalks along Court Avenue between Third and Fourth streets.

Each team of up to five participants will paint a four-foot by four-foot section of sidewalk. Teams will create designs that incorporate the 2010 Drake Relays theme, “Relays 101,” along with their organization’s brand. The sidewalks will remain painted throughout the year, making designs visible to the thousands of patrons who visit the Downtown Farmers Market, restaurants, businesses and activities on Court Avenue.

The cost to register is $250 for businesses and $125 for nonprofit and community organizations, with the money going to cover the event costs. Registration forms, which are available online, and designs must be submitted to Drake’s alumni office for review by April 14.

Teams also are required to send a representative to attend an informational meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. on April 15 at Court Avenue Restaurant and Brewing Co.

Drake will provide T-shirts to all participants and painting tools, including brushes and rollers. Each organization is responsible for purchasing its own paint, which must meet specific criteria, from the Sherwin-Williams store at 515 16th St.

Participants will check in between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. and will have until noon to paint their designs. Winning teams will receive a gift pack from Drake and their designs will be featured on the alumni page of Drake’s Web site.
