The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the NCAA Office of Inclusion have announced the launch of a historic Paralympic track and field initiative that will crown the first-ever wheelchair track champion at the 2023 Drake Relays. The initiative is part of the USOPC/NCAA Para-College Inclusion Project, which was launched in fall 2022 to engage schools with adaptive sport and increase Paralympic sport understanding, awareness and connection across the collegiate landscape. The Para track and field tactical team’s recommendation included efforts focused on building the pathway for the sport of Paralympic track and field at the college level, specifically developing a mechanism to crown a wheelchair collegiate champion during the 2023 racing season. The wheelchair championship will be part of the live broadcast on CBS Sports Network on April 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. The initiative is one of several initiatives, including launching the first-ever Team USA vs. College All-Star wheelchair basketball event during March Madness and the inclusion of wheelchair tennis events at various USTA and ITA championships.
