The Partnership for a Hunger Free Polk County recently donated $110,000 to Eat Greater Des Moines to expand its food recovery programming in the metro area. The gift will enable the collection of more edible food that would otherwise be discarded from restaurants, caterers, schools and event centers and the distribution of it to people in need through local service organizations. “This contribution is a real game changer for Eat Greater Des Moines and food rescue efforts in Greater Des Moines,” said Aubrey Alvarez, executive director of Eat Greater Des Moines. “Hunger Free Polk County and the Polk County supervisors have been great partners and recognize the value of our collaborative efforts to expand food rescue.” To deliver the food, Eat Greater Des Moines recently partnered with WesleyLife Meals on Wheels, Kum & Go, the Food Bank of Iowa and multiple other service organizations. More than 100,000 meals have been delivered in the first six months, and Eat Greater Des Moines plans to expand its food recovery transportation efforts.
