The $80 million development, which is part of Michael’s Landing, has been in the planning phase for the past couple of years. Marketing Director Lisa Cole said Wesley Retirement Services cannot move forward until it has reservation deposits for 70 percent of its independent living units, under its financing agreement through tax-exempt municipal bonds.

Cole said it is close to achieving that goal and could begin construction as early as this fall. The project is expected to be completed in 2009.

The campus will include 137 apartments, 14 villas, 32 assisted living suites, 16 memory support suites and 40 skilled nursing bedrooms. Entrance fees to the community, which guarantees housing, ranges from $140,000 to $485,000 for the apartments and villas.

Edgewater will also have a restaurant, bistro and market, sports pub, state-of-the-art fitness center with an indoor swimming pool, day spa, chapel, performing arts center, business center, library and creative arts studio.

“It really is in many ways a resort design,” Cole said. “It offers a convenient lifestyle. I think one of the greatest misconceptions out there is that this is like the traditional retirement home that our parents and grandparents lived in, but this is really a new approach.”

This is Wesley Retirement Services’ sixth retirement community.
