My life goal is simple: make a positive impact. I’m lucky to work in a profession charged with doing that each day. That’s why I’m excited to work for an organization with a reputation of local leadership and high-quality work. The Business Record’s focus on community engagement and innovation drew me to join the staff as associate editor. I’m excited to meet Greater Des Moines leaders and learn about important initiatives we can support through our work.

I was previously the editor at the Marshalltown Times-Republican, my hometown newspaper, for a little over a year. I experienced “trial by tornado” as an EF3 storm whipped through the town on just my 10th day on the job. Covering the community’s many acts of resilience was inspiring. Working for a daily community newspaper gave me a great appreciation of the public service journalists provide.

I am an Iowa State grad (Go Cyclones!) and worked as an editor at the Iowa State Daily for four years. I served as special projects editor for two years – focusing on engaging the community with relevant issues through publications and events. I then served as editor-in-chief for two years – working to better collaborate with and serve the community. I graduated with degrees in journalism and marketing because I am equally passionate about news and business.

When I’m not at work, I enjoy working out, reading (because I don’t get enough of that at work!), spending time with loved ones or volunteering. I’m currently on the board of directors for the Assault Care Center Extending Shelter & Support and am also involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I am eager to get more involved in the Greater Des Moines area.

Feel free to reach me with advice, story ideas and feedback. I look forward to leading and participating in the Business Record’s many initiatives to help businesses do business better. Contact me at 515-661-6085 or emilybarske@bpcdm.com
