The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today released “New Era of Smarter Food Safety,” a new protocol aimed at significantly reducing the number of food-borne illness outbreaks in the United States. The FDA said the blueprint “outlines a partnership between government, industry and public health advocates based on a commitment to create a more modern approach to food safety.” FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said the document represents achievable goals to enhance traceability, improve predictive analytics, respond more rapidly to outbreaks, address new business models, reduce contamination of food and foster the development of stronger food safety cultures. Online grocery shopping is among the new business models addressed; estimates before the pandemic indicated online groceries would account for 20% of consumer food spending within the next few years.
