Federal grant boosts Des Moines bridge projects
The city of Des Moines has received an $8 million federal transportation grant that will be used for a $22 million project to rebuild and replace downtown bridges. Under a program called Bridges to Opportunity: Des Moines’ Community Connection, the city of Des Moines plans to replace the Locust Street bridge and rehabilitate the Court and Scott avenue bridges over the Des Moines River and the Southwest First Street trail bridge over the Raccoon River. Funding also includes a separate $2.5 million federal grant and $11.5 million in city funds. The $8 million grant was supported by most of the Iowa congressional delegation and a range of businesses, business organizations and civic groups.
